This Saturday at Gray Area, False Profit, LLC presents Alchemy, an evening of interactive art and speakers from a wide swath of Bay Area denizens.

Alchemy is an annual San Francisco event, packed with interactive art installations built to connect and amaze you. Participation highly encouraged — but we know you won’t be able to resist picking up that joystick, paintbrush, or microphone. See the flyer and press release below for more information.

For investors, some of the more visible outbursts of imagination will come on May 1 at Gray Area Foundation For The Arts (GAFFTA), where Alchemy will take place. Activities from zoetrope-building to ice cream making will take place alongside an interactive hyphae video floor, puppet theater, an immersive diorama, strobe flowers, and demonstrations from a wide range of experts in exotic disciplines.

WHEN: Saturday May 1, 8pm-2am
WHERE: GAFFTA, 55 Taylor Street, San Francisco
HOW: $15 at the door
WHY: Because you’re tired of those same-old jello-mold art gallery evenings and want to have FUN with art instead!
RSVP: on the facebook page

Schedule of Speakers

9PM – MetaMind Evolution by Andreas Stadler, software engineer and inventor, presents his work on neuro-feedback EEG mind-machines. He explores their applications to meditation, lucid dreaming, and brain training, as well as creative uses in music and art. After the talk, you’re invited to don the MetaMind headset and software, displaying beautiful visualizations from multiple channels of your very own brainwave data. (http://meta-mind.de/)

10PM – In Your Mind’s Eye by Dr. Tristan Ursell, Stanford University. You are a highly evolved creature, bred to perceive that which keeps you alive best, not what represents reality best. Learn about why you see the colors you do, and how your brain distorts the world around us.

11PM – John Bela is a founder of the design collective REBAR, creators of the global PARK(ing) Day event, Civic Center Victory Garden, Panhandle Bandshell, and other transformations of public space. He is a producer of creative ideas and a maker of things. John will present the works of Rebar, and how its many pursuits remix the ordinary, repurpose the ubiquitous and restructure the fabric of the urban environment. (http://www.rebargroup.org)

12AM – cutsupposepossesssuck by M. Ryan Noble, redefines social roles for artists through collaborative and therapeutic art processes, covering a wide range of media and experimental performances that fuse archetypal traditions with contemporary experience. A discussion of cultural engagement, sensory integration, and sub/un/hyperconsciousness as a means to create a metaphysical art experience leads into an experimental performance. Noble becomes a living sculpture in the space, guiding and collaborating with participants to develop the piece. (http://www.imagici.org)

1AM – Matt Bell is an inventor, artist, and entrepreneur who has done a wide variety of projects including gesture-based interactive displays, intricate laser-cut sculpture, and, most recently, floating art for the Ephemerisle festival. He’ll walk you through his multiprojector no-computer-necessary video feedback system that generates fractals live, allowing you and your friends to manipulate the parameters and output.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, DC — Officials from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) today announced that no regulations will be placed on the so-called Outlandish Ideas (OI) market. This move is seen as a victory for both capitalists and artists preparing for False Profit, LLC’s fourth annual Alchemy event on May 1.

“We’re pleased that the commission sees the wisdom in letting us take our batshit-crazy ideas as far as possible,” said False Profit staff economist Rosco Petracula, speaking through a prismatic tube from a tiny sacred galaxy unfolding inside the mind of an obscure minor deity. “After all, hasn’t this sort of reasoning driven every major economic advancement in history?”

Two years ago, the public learned an acronym previously only known to quantitative financial analysts: CDS (Credit Default Swap). These financial instruments, built on bets around subprime mortgages, led to the massive collapse of credit markets and sent the global economy into a tailspin. In hindsight, the way these types of investments pretended to do away with risk seem absurd.

Today, we know that risk is unavoidable and absurdity inevitable. False Profit’s Alchemy event, now cleared by the SEC, is expected to further provoke wild creativity in the OI markets. No idea is too outlandish to be unleashed. While some fear increases in spontaneous interaction and artistic expression, many are welcoming the preposterous unpredictability.

Reacting to the SEC statement, Mary Pranckster, Director of the Gonzo Tactics Institute said, “The primary reason we saw a meltdown in ‘08 was actually low insanity levels. Sure, at the time everyone thought things were crazy, but let me tell you: You ain’t seen nothing yet.”

This Thursday is the next edition of the Recombinant Media Labs +dialog symposia series, presented at the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts. This month we will be exploring sustainable models of cultural production within organizations and festivals, and will be joined by several leading voices in entities known for their artistic incubation.

Alain Mongeau of MUTEK, Marian Goodell of Burning Man, Naut Humon of Recombinant Media Labs, and Mathias Holzmann of Palomar5 will be lead in discussion by Mathew Dryhurst. As we enter into both a new economy and a new technological reality with the means of production distributed to a wide audience, focus and foundation of arts organizations must change to properly catalyze and nurture artistic works and communities. We’ll be discussing ways that some of these organizations have already managed to be agile enough to survive in this complex environment.

When: Thursday, April 15th 2010 at 7:00pm
Where: Gray Area Foundation For the Arts, 55 Taylor St. San Francisco
Recommended $5-10 donation, however no-one will be turned away for lack of funds.
Seating is limited, and on a first come first serve basis.

Recombinant Media Labs is proud to present the third installment of its monthly +dialog symposium series.

In the aftermath of the economic meltdown, arts and innovation play a pivotal role in reinterpreting and revolutionizing the spaces where we live, work and play. Whether it be in re-branding business practice or empowering community development, creative thought is an indispensable ingredient to reclaiming and recoding our collective futures.

This discussion will focus on new and sustainable models for creative economies, and the importance of nurturing creative impulse to developing new models, new tools and new behaviors. What are the challenges we will face in this new dawn of creative enterprise? What roles can we play as individuals and communities to support these efforts?

Invited to this discussion is Alain Mongeau, founder and Artistic Director of Montreal’s MUTEK festival. MUTEK is a non-profit organization dedicated to the dissemination and development of digital creativity in sound, music, and audio-visual art. For 11 years, Mutek has worked to challenge and redefine notions of our communities and greater culture, paving the way for numerous artists, festivals, labels, and other relevant support nodes. Earlier this month, MUTEK was the proud recipient of the distinguished Grand Prix du Conseil des Arts de Montréal, the highest honor bestowed on an arts organization in Montreal.

He will be joined in conversation by:

Marian Goodell, Director of Business and Communications for Burning Man. Amongst other accomplishments, Goodell worked with Burning Man participants in 1997 to create a Regional Network supporting their local communities, inspiring civic participation, and engaging people through Burning Man’s ethics and values. As of 2009, the Regional Network includes over 160 individuals in 125 locations worldwide.

Naut Humon, founder of Recombinant Media Labs, former Director of A&R at Asphodel Records and AV curator for select portions of the annual ARS Electronica Festival in Austria where he also helped coordinate their Digital Musics category for ten years.

Mathias Holzmann, resident artist at Gray Area Foundation For the Arts and founder of Berlin’s nomadic Palomar5, a non profit initiative that explores new spaces for innovation and new formats for people to cooperate and make real change.

The panel will be moderated by Mathew Dryhurst (Recombinant Media Labs).

The event will take place at 7:00pm on Thursday, April 15th 2010 at Gray Area Foundation For the Arts, 55 Taylor St. San Francisco. Recommended $5-10 donation, however no-one will be turned away for lack of funds.

The HardRock interactive multi-touch wall, which I developed the sound spatialization engine for last year with Obscura Digital, has been selected for inclusion in the 2010 Communication Arts Annual. It was created by a large team of people including Steve Mason, Ammon Haggerty, Rab Clinton, Michael Harville, Niklas Lundback, Nikolai Cornell, Patrick Connolly, and Hoss Ward.

The Hard Rock Wall is an 18’x4’ multi-user, multi-touch high-resolution wall showcasing thousands of pieces of searchable memorabilia at the Hard Rock Cafe in Las Vegas Nevada. Three 2k projectors handle 100 hi-res images and videos simultaneously in realtime for up to 6 users. Images flow seamlessly between screens and scale up to 12 megapixels for incredibly lifelike interactions with the objects.

Complementing the video system is a six channel audio spatialization system that creates a unique experience for each user. Each person hears a spatialized representation of the sounds produced by their memorabilia, or the currently playing video. Items can be flicked down the screen, creating sound effects shooting across the entire wall.

From the Communication Arts Jury:

“A perfect complement to the physical memorabilia; it creates a virtual link between visitors and Hard Rock Cafes all over the world. It’s a great example of a brand that understands how to create a sense of connectedness.” —Rachel Pasqua

“The physical space has barely been tapped and the RockWall is a perfect example of what’s to come. Beautiful design, animation and a huge achievement.” —Mathew Ranauro

She will demonstrate several of her unique natural-object instruments, including ones constructed with materials, such as penguin bones and limpet shells, that she collected in Antarctica last year.

* SURABHI SARAF will present her recent audio/visual works. She is interested in the dense, layered structure of sound with a focus on creating dynamic physical experiences. Her short performance will involve live singing and digital manipulation of the sound.

* JULIA OGRYDZIAK will present on working with the K-Bow, a new technology from Keith McMillen Instruments, which provides expressive live controls through a specially designed blue-tooth bow, transforming the possibilities of string performance. She will show how the bow works and give a live performance.

In addition, we will have awesome short LIGHTNING TALKS:
* SARAH GRANT says “i will be discussing my latest work using conductive felt as an interface for sound. i am interested in drawing connections between the similar properties of sound and fabric — specifically texture and the malleability and layering of form.”

* PETER KIRN (representing the Kokoromi collective of women and men) on the GAFFTA exhibit of ONE BUTTON OBJECTS: What can you do with one button? In an age of ever-more-complex touch interfaces, we’d like to imagine what a single, tangible, hardware button can mean for a design. To celebrate the arrival of their Gamma game event in San Francisco, art game collective Kokoromi is teaming up with Create Digital Music and Create Digital Motion to launch a one night show of objects that respond to this question. The work extends from games to interactive art and musical instruments.

CHERYL E. LEONARD is a composer, performer and instrument-builder whose music investigates sounds, structures and materials from the natural world. Her recent works cultivate stones, leaves, wood, water, ice, sand, shells, feathers and bones as musical instruments. Leonard uses microphones to explore the intricate worlds of sound hidden within these instruments and develops compositions that highlight the unique voices they contain. Many of her projects involve constructing one-of-a-kind sculptural instruments, which are played live onstage. Cheryl also enjoys creating site-specific works and collaborating across artistic disciplines. She has written numerous soundtracks for film, video, dance and theater, and designed sounds for exhibits at the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Cheryl holds a BA from Hampshire College and an MA from Mills College. Her music has been performed worldwide and featured on several television programs and in the video documentary Noisy People.

BIO:
For over 35 years, Jon Rose has been at the sharp end of experimental, new and improvised music. Central to that practice has been ‘The Relative Violin’ project, a unique output, rich in content, realising almost everything on, with, and about the violin – and string music in general. Most celebrated is the worldwide Fence project; least known are the relative violins – over 20 home experimental string instruments, created specifically for and in Australia.

In 1977, he started Australia’s first musician run collective for the promotion and recording of improvised music – Fringe Benefit.

In the area of interactive electronics, his work is considered exemplary, having pioneered the use of the MIDI bow in the ‘Hyperstring’ project in the 1980s with the Steim Institute, Amsterdam – and with whom he continues to collaborate often in interactive projects involving sport, games, or the environment.

Jon Rose has appeared on more than 60 albums and collaborated with many of the mavericks of new music including Kronos String Quartet, John Cage, Derek Bailey, Butch Morris, John Zorn, Alvin Curran, Fred Frith, George Lewis, Otomo Yoshihide, Christian Marclay, Eugene Chadbourne, etc. at festivals of New Music, Jazz, and Sound Art world wide such as Ars Elektronica, Festival D’Automne, Maerzmusik, Dokumenta, North Sea Jazz Fest, Leipzig Jazz Fest, European Media, New Music America, the Vienna Festival, the Berlin Jazz Festival, etc.

Recently Jon Rose was commissioned by the Kronos String Quartet to write and build “Music from 4 Fences” for the Sydney Opera House; realised his bicycle powered “Pursuit” project at Carriage Works, Sydney; performed a completely new and improvised solo part for the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra; created two major radiophonic works for the BBC on the first Aboriginal string orchestra and the history of the piano in 19th century Australia; toured in Europe with his current improvisation groups ‘Futch’ and ‘Strike’; premiered his interactive huge Ball project at The Melbourne Festival; performed his interactive multi-media composition “Internal Combustion” for violin and orchestra at The Philharmonic, Berlin; and been apprehended by the Israeli Defence Forces at the Separation Fence near Ramallah in the occupied territories.

In 2007 he gave the Peggy Glanville-Hicks address – Listening to history: some proposals for reclaiming the practice of music. It has been published in over six journals, including The Leonardo Music Journal of MIT Press.

For the last several months I’ve been working with the GlobalLives Project, an incredibly talented and dedicated team of individuals spread around the globe raising social consciousness through video documentation. I was brought into this project originally by Danielle Engleman of the Long Now Foundation, a big sponsor of this event. I’ve been helping with the video specifications for the main event, along with renowned designers and architects from FOURM design+build, Sand Studios and Ade, as well as digital media artist, Rafael Alcala to create the world premiere exhibit and opening night installation.

The opening is this Friday night at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.

The Global Lives Project (GLP) is a collective of filmmakers, artists, designers, programmers and everyday people who seek to expand individual global awareness through documenting 24 hours in the lives of people throughout the world. Rather than present narrative film, Global Lives seeks to present life as it unfolds at its natural pace. We hope that this experience will foster empathy, and compel viewers to think about their own lives within the context of a larger whole. Already the footage has been captured, edited, translated, and subtitled for 10 countries; Brazil, China, India, Japan, Malawi, the US, Lebanon, Indonesia, Serbia, and Kazakhstan.

Providing music for this event will be the impeccable Kid Kameleon, Chief Boima and Tinker; we’re incredibly excited to have them on board.

Join us from 7:30pm to 11:30pm
on Friday February 26, 2010
the party is FREE, but do RSVP HERE

Saturday February 20, 2010
COM# – Capacity is strictly limited
Advanced tickets – $20, Door -$25 if any are left!

Tickets: http://cmpnd333.info

It’s been quite some time since we’ve hosted an event of our own, and you can be certain we’ve chosen just the right reason to rise from our slumber. Yes indeed, it is a rare occasion that Stefan Betke aka Pole visits SF, we heard cries for months from those who missed his last performance here. Seriously, you do not want to miss this opportunity!

Our friends at The Bunker in NYC on his work:
“Stefan Betke aka Pole is one of the most important and well known electronic music producers to emerge in the past decade. His first three albums (“1″, “2″, & “3″), released from 1998 to 2000
and packaged in solid blue, red, and yellow sleeves, are absolute stone-cold classics. Betke reissued these three sadly out-of-print albums as a box set on his own ~scape imprint (titled “1 2 3″) in 2008, so they are once again available to the unfortunate souls who missed his timeless music the first time around. More recently, Pole released the “Steingarten” album on 2007, further developing his sound. He also did A&R for the critically acclaimed “Round Black Ghosts” compilations on ~scape, two collection of tracks that blur the line between dubstep and techno. We’ve caught Pole’s newest live set a few times in Europe, and he’s taken things in a much more dancefloor direction while maintaining the Pole sound design and creativity we all love.”

Joining Pole on the journey from Berlin to SF (via Unsound at The Bunker NYC) is the ~Scape label co-founder Barbara Preisinger. Since 1996, Barbara’s musical preferences as dj have changed and developed continuously from all kinds of experimental electronic music, via Hip Hop and Dub influenced tunes to House and Techno and beyond. But her passion is to play for the dancefloor, mixing kicking house and deep techno – often incorporating the music of scape related artists and label friends such as John Tejada, Stephen Beaupré, Portable, Safety Scissors, Daniel Bell, Dimbiman aka DJ Zip. All the while remaining open towards interesting and outstanding tunes that makes you move. She has been doing exactly that at many a prestigious location around the globe in recent years, including WMF in Berlin, Robert Johnson in Frankfurt, Batofar in Paris, Culture Box in Copenhagen and festivals as Sonar, Benicassim, DMF, Groove Parade Spain, to mention but a few. Since 2008 Barbara has hosted the party series DEEPERSTILL together with Daniel Bell in Berlin. In Autumn 2009 she started the 12inch vinyl label SLICES OF LIFE.

And of course the night would not feel complete without the heart & feet warming contributions of two of our favorite SF DJs: Nikola Baytala & Jason Short!

Further details, including directions and set times will be announced day of. email: cmpnd333@gmail.com

com#333 is a new name for a longstanding, ever-rotating collective of people working to present extra-ordinary, family-style experimental, hybrid, and electronic music events & spectacles in our legendary immersive space in San Francisco.

Transpose continues Gray Area’s investigation into expansive forms of technology and the painting of landscapes through digital means. Code is a rule for converting a piece of information into another form or representation; Here we present two artists who work visually and creatively with code, shifting data around into different compositions, transposing their received nature into an alternate one through interpolation and algorithms and communicating through this source.
